Mapping the Digital Carbon Footprint of UK’s Arts & Culture Sector

A pioneering sector-wide study

UK Arts & Culture Sector Website Carbon Footprint Study

In a groundbreaking collaboration between Digital Carbon Online and Supercool, we’re embarking on a comprehensive three-month study to measure and analyse the digital carbon footprint of the UK’s leading arts and cultural institutions’ websites.

This first-of-its-kind research will provide valuable insights into the environmental impact of the sector’s digital presence.

As the cultural sector increasingly embraces digital transformation, understanding its environmental impact becomes crucial. With the arts and culture sector leading conversations about sustainability, this study will provide actionable data to support their journey towards digital sustainability.

Using Digital Carbon Online’s unique dual methodology approach, we’ll:

  • Assess real-time carbon emissions from website operations
  • Provide comprehensive benchmarking across the sector
  • Identify common patterns
  • Suggest opportunities for improvement

The report will also set a sector-wide starting point for knowing what good looks like, and how we can improve.

“At Supercool we care deeply about our impact on the planet, and we know the cultural sector cares too.” said Kate Mroczkowski, Strategy Director at Supercool “But knowing where to start, and what to tackle first can be challenging. This report is an opportunity to provide the sector with a tool that helps organisations balance their actions and goals when it comes to reducing the impact of their website. The report will also set a sector-wide starting point for knowing what good looks like, and how we can improve.”

“We’re excited to be working with Digital Carbon Online on this report. Having spent the last few years providing resources and tools for the sector, we feel this is the next step in helping the sector understand and reduce the environmental impact of websites.”

“We’re very excited to support Supercool and the UK’s arts and culture sector to address the environmental impact of their websites.” comments Scott Stonham, CEO Digital Carbon Online. “The sector is a significant contributor to the economy, providing education, employment, entertainment and inspiration to 91% of UK adults1”

“We hope this project with Supercool will provide valuable insights and inspire the sector to take a leadership role in tackling the digital aspects of their environmental impact with the same relentless focus they apply to their other sustainability activities” .
